Abstract

Based on the narratives of undocumented migrants in Italy and Portugal and their partners, the project will investigate how their presence and conjugal practices re-configure the meanings and functions of citizenship and human rights in specific contexts of mobility. The research will be based on a comparative and qualitative approach with a transnational perspective, building the analysis on in-depth interviews to married couples. The project focuses on couples in which, before marriage, one partner was undocumented and the other had a formally recognized residence or nationality status. This study will reflect the nuances of the legally/socially attributed versus self-perceived status of migrants in the context of their conjugal relations and its repercussions on individuals and couples.
